Director's Welcome

Welcome to The Naval Academy Primary School, a unique and historic preschool and elementary school situated on the banks of Mill Creek as the creek opens into the Chesapeake Bay. Since the early twentieth century when NAPS began as a nursery school, it has been our pleasure to welcome into our fold the children of active duty and retired military personnel, USNA employees, many other government agency’s employees, as well as local residents who have found NAPS to be the perfect fit for their children’s elementary education. NAPS provides a safe, structured, and nurturing environment that recognizes and acts upon the unique needs and circumstances of these children, many of whom will attend a number of schools in their academic careers, both in the United States and abroad.

Here at NAPS we pride ourselves on our caring community of teachers, staff, and parents, many of whom have first-hand experience with this sometimes transient lifestyle and the challenges which that can present to children and families. Whether you find yourself in Annapolis for only a short while or are here long term, we’d like to provide that sense of “home” and a stable environment where your children will thrive. Our NAPS staff get to know each and every child and they are welcomed each morning by name during carpool, greeted many times throughout the day in the classrooms and hallways, and as we say good-bye during afternoon carpool. Students make friends both in their own classrooms and grades, as well as with older and younger students during programs such as Reading Buddies that pair kindergartners and first graders with third-, fourth-, or fifth-grade readers. Children also have a chance to perform each year at NAPS, from the PK circus to the 5th grade Nativity play at our beloved annual Christmas pageant.  We also regularly reach out to both our local and world community through community service fundraisers that raise awareness for many different charities and organizations and teaches our students about their responsibility as global citizens.

We continue to grow our programs and offerings each year and will continue to strive for excellence in all areas of our curriculum. We have also made expanding technology a priority to give our students the most advantageous experiences that we can in order to prepare them for their future endeavors.

I invite you to explore our website for further information, and I look forward to welcoming you for a visit and tour so that you can see for yourself what makes NAPS so unique. Each year brings something special and exciting to our little schoolhouse and I am eager to share our continuing story with you.
